Adopt a red panda
Adopting a red panda at Paignton Zoo is a great gift idea that will also help us to deliver our wildlife conservation programmes. By adopting a red panda, your money will make a real contribution to our vital conservation work for red panda and many other species.
Red pandas are listed as endangered, with as few as 10,000 individuals believed to be living in the wild today. Populations are in decline.

Habitat
Bamboo forest at high altitudes.
Wild Diet
Bamboo shoots, grass, roots, fruit, acorns and occasional mice and birds.
Behaviour
This panda has a rusty red coat and a long bushy tail which resembles a racoon more than a panda. Indeed, the red panda is not closely related to the giant panda at all. It is primarily a nocturnal animal and spends most of its time curled on a branch, tail over its head or head in chest. They live in pairs and form small family groups.
Breeding
The female has 1-2 young after a gestation period of 90-150 days. The longer period is when the fertile egg lies dormant. The young stay with the mother until they are 1 year old.
Threats
Hunting, habitat destruction, hunting for skin.
Conservation
The red panda has legal protection in Nepal and China, and occurs in several national parks. Conservation breeding programmes in zoos are co-ordinated world-wide.
