Listening Zoo Visit, Sunday 12th May 2019, 9.00am - 11.30am
Sure you may be a regular at Paignton Zoo but have you ever experienced the zoo whilst being totally silent to soak up all the sights and sounds that you are surrounded with?
Sound intriguing? Then read on...
Paignton Zoo is working with researchers at the University of Exeter and the University of St Andrews on a project called ‘Listening to the Zoo’, which is being funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
As part of this project, the research team are inviting our members to take part in a Silent Zoo Visit (where participants are required to make a conscious effort not to make noise during their visit) and a Listening Zoo Visit (where participants will be guided by a researcher to listen to the sounds of the Zoo). The aim is to see if these unconventional visits have any effect on the way that participants think and feel about their zoo experience, especially our animals.
The Silent Zoo Visit will begin at 9.45am on Saturday 11th May. The visit will begin with a welcome and briefing by researchers for 10 minutes and then you will be invited to explore the Zoo at your own pace for an hour and a half. Afterwards you are requested to participate in a 40-minute feedback session where you will discuss your visit in a group together with the other participants and the researchers.
The Listening Zoo Visit will begin at 9.00am on Sunday 12th May, There will be a welcome by researchers for 10 minutes and then you will take part in an exclusive out of hours guided tour for an hour and a half. Following the tour, you will be requested to participate in a 40-minute feedback session to discuss your visit with the other participants and the researchers.
Your travel to the Zoo will be paid (to the value of £10) and free refreshments will be provided during the feedback session.
Who can take part?
Due to the nature of this experiment this opportunity is for adults only (18+ years) so unfortunately cannot be offered to family groups. We do request that if you sign up for an experimental visit you ensure you are able to attend the feedback session.
