Paignton Zoo celebrates local child’s fundraising triumph

Staff at Paignton Zoo are celebrating the achievements of a local child, Letty Troth, who has won a Civic Award for her outstanding fundraising efforts. The team was thrilled to learn that Letty had selected Paignton Zoo as the beneficiary of her fundraising initiative.

Letty began her fundraising journey as part of a school project, where she was tasked with choosing a charity to support. She said:

“I chose Paignton Zoo as my charity because I love what they do. It’s very local to me and I think the zoo is somewhere worth helping. It’s a place that is overlooked by many visitors as they assume the zoo will always have lots of money; however every penny counts to support the animals. Some of the animals would be extinct if it wasn’t for Paignton Zoo.”

Letty used her creativity to set up a unique stall inviting attendees to ’Guess the Weight of Otilie the Giraffe.’ This idea successfully raised £34, but Letty’s dedication didn’t stop there. She extended her fundraising activities to her school’s Christmas fair, raising the total donation to an impressive £60.

Upon hearing about her efforts, the zoo invited Letty and her mother in to present her cheque in person. The team then surprised her and her mother by offering them a once-in-a-lifetime experience as thank you – the opportunity to feed Otilie the giraffe.

Will Keen, Fundraising Manager for Paignton Zoo, commented:

“We are incredibly grateful for Letty’s passion and initiative. Her story is a testament to how even the youngest individuals can make a significant impact. Every contribution, big or small, aids us in our vital mission to help halt species decline.”
