A giraffe born on Valentine’s Day is celebrating his first birthday at Paignton Zoo.

Valentino was born on Tuesday 14th February 2012 to mother Janica and father Yoda.

Paignton Zoo staff asked Herald Express readers to name him and they voted for the name from a short-list drawn up by his keepers. He is one of five Rothschild's giraffes at Paignton Zoo.

The charity raises money by offering animal adoptions. Paignton Zoo Adoption and Experience Co-ordinator Amy Crompton-Holgate said: “The giraffe is our most popular animals for adoptions, followed by the African elephant and the Sumatran tiger. We have some species which haven't been adopted at all – the takin, for instance. And some of our animals with just one adoptee include the Brazilian cockroach, porcupine, pudu and toucan.”

Rothschild's (Baringo) giraffes are classified as Endangered – there is a European Endangered species Programme for the species.
