A bunch of intrepid South Devon athletes is planning to run the entire English Riviera Great Gorilla Trail.

Runners from South Devon Athletic Club are going to attempt the run on Sunday 15th
September, starting at 8.00am on Babbacombe Downs and finishing at Shoalstone Pool, Brixham.

It’s a distance of approximately 20 miles, and takes in all 19 Great Gorillas on the English Riviera.

Steve Hookins, from the Club, said: “When I saw the location of the gorillas on the trail map I wondered how far the distance would be to see each one. Then after plotting a route and seeing that it was a challenging distance, I put it to the club that we run the distance for charity. The club thought it was a great idea and it went from there. It also makes a different reason to run the same roads that we trek every week!

“We spoke to Greenway, Union Square and Cockington as we thought we might have some difficulties meeting their gorillas, but all three have been superb and are accommodating us.”

Between 6 and 8 runners intend to complete the full trail, and they hope that many more will join in along parts of the route. They are aiming to raise money for the Great Gorillas Project’s partner charity, Childrens’ Hospice South West.

Steve again: “We are going to place our run mascot Eric – appropriately enough a cuddly gorilla - on every gorilla and take a photo “Where’s Wally?” style. We will also use the QR codes to enter the competition.”

The Great Gorillas Project, celebrating Paignton Zoo’s 90th birthday, has created a unique free public art trail with life-size model gorillas sponsored by local businesses and painted in original designs by specially-commissioned artists.
