One top Devon attraction has been miniaturised by another due to popular demand. Babbacombe Model Village has been busy refurbishing its site, replacing models and vehicles and adding new ones. Simon Wills, General Manager said “Our most recent edition is a model house which you can get right up close to and peer inside the windows.”
The village frequently surveys visitors to ask what things they would love to see in miniature. Two of the most requested items were a boat/harbour scene and a zoo. Their west country fishing village scene, which opened in 2014, showcases a beautiful harbour and village, typical of what you might see along the west country coastline. Simon added “After many requests from visitors, a zoo model scene became a top of the list item, and who better to team up with than Paignton Zoo, one of the country’s biggest and most popular zoos.”
Over the last few months the team at the Model Village has been working with Paignton Zoo, a registered charity, to decide on what buildings and Zoo scenes could be re-created in miniature, right down to the last detail. Simon said “Due to space constraints we were unable to recreate the whole Zoo, but in conjunction with the Zoo we have assessed which displays are amongst the most popular with visitors, and planned how it could all be laid out.”
As well as outdoor scenes, some of the Zoo buildings are set-dressed inside, recreating some of the internal displays. All of the tiny animals were created in-house and will be living in the model scenes. An elephant, apes, rhinos & baboons are just a few of the animals to be seen in miniature.
Simon added “We don’t want to give away too much detail and spoil the surprise, leaving it to see what our visitors will discover in miniature. We are certain that many people will enjoy visiting both attractions to compare big and small!”
The Paignton Zoo model will be complete by the end of July. Keep an eye on the Model Village website for updates www.model-village.co.uk
