So many people have fond memories of Paignton Zoo’s Great Gorillas Project, when 30 brightly-decorated, life-sized gorilla statues wowed crowds in Exeter and Torbay during the long summer of 2013. Well, some of them are still out and about in public – here’s a guide to where they are.
Takamanda is studying at the University of Exeter. Until the end of the summer she will be on public view in the University Forum Building, Stocker Road, Streatham campus.
Poirot can be found in the window of the Latitude Clothing Company (42 Middle Street, Brixham TQ5 8ER). He helped his owners, Blue Goose Marine Ltd and Mini4RNLI, raise over £9000 for The Torbay RNLI. He will be helping once again next year when BGM and Mini4RNLI embark on The RNLI Whisky Rally
Lilo, who is owned by Torbay Council, has been at Torre Abbey for the last few months. He is going to be moving to Paignton Green for the summer holidays, including Children's Week.
Nacho is happily living in Plymouth and is never far from the news. He sits proudly in his patch on the A386 (Tavistock Road) just south of the Woolwell roundabout. He first appeared there on Christmas Eve and was subsequently featured on the front page of the Plymouth Herald.
Herbert was the first Great Gorilla and it is fitting that he takes pride of place at the main entrance to Paignton Zoo. He is a very popular attraction, with many visitors taking full advantage of the terrific photo opportunity.
Gumball, formerly known as Hippocampus, can be found at the Cavanna Homes Fusion Marketing Suite in Paignton. He will shortly be moving house, into his brand new show home later this month. Watch this space for more news.
Penguilla is the new kid on the block. This Great Gorilla first made an appearance in June 2014 and can be found right outside Living Coasts on Torquay harbour side. Penguilla was painted by Cleo Heard, who also created the Great Gorilla called Bananarilla.
The Tiverton Portas Company have brought Beverley to Tiverton where she can be found on display in Phoenix Lane.
