Bean is a Sulawesi crested black macaque, he will be three months old today.
These monkeys live in one small part of the island of Sulawesi and nowhere else in the world; their conservation status has recently gone from Endangered to Critically Endangered, so every zoo baby is another little victory in the fight against looming extinction. The Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust supports the Selamatkan Yaki! (which means “Save Sulawesi macaques!”) project to raise awareness and take practical measures to protect this monkey in the wild.
They can be seen in our collections at Paignton Zoo and Newquay Zoo. There is a European Endangered species Programme (EEP) for the species which is co-ordinated by Paignton Zoo.
