Sustainable Summer

Sustainable Summer 2022 web banner desktop

We believe that every action matters. We can all make small changes that make a big difference to our planet.

Our Sustainable Summer campaign will take you on a sustainable journey, with tips and ideas along the way to help you live more sustainably. We’ll also be celebrating some of our local heroes who are already leading the way! We’re focussing on 3 key topics over the next few months:

Sustainable palm oil

What is palm oil?

Palm oil is the world’s most widely used vegetable oil. It’s a versatile and high-yielding crop, but increased demand for it has led to an increase in plantations, causing the destruction of vast areas of tropical rainforest, home to many rare species.

How can you help?

Check if the products you’re buying on your weekly shop contain sustainable palm oil. Look out for the RSPO logo or scan your shopping using the Impact Score shopping app to make sure.

Marine plastics

What are marine plastics?

Every piece of plastic ever made still exists, and lots of it ends up in our oceans, causing the death of millions of sea birds and marine creatures.

How can you help?

Reduce the amount of single-use plastics you purchase and use and replace them with sustainable alternatives. For example, buy a reusable water bottle and opt for plastic-free packaging where possible.

Responsible consumption

What is responsible consumption?

We’re using the Earth’s resources 1.7 times faster than they can regenerate. Our culture of overconsumption, of buying and using more than we need, is affecting our planet in a big way.

How can you help?

Shop locally, only buy items that you need and that will last, and buy clothing and other items second-hand if you can. Re-use and repurpose things rather than sending them to landfill.

How are we making Paignton Zoo more sustainable?

  • Only using and selling products that contain sustainable palm oil
  • Eliminating the sale of plastic drinks bottles
  • Only using packaging that is compostable
  • Removing plastic sweet wrappers in our gift shop
  • Supporting sustainable shopping with an eco-friendly range of soft toys
  • Repurposing materials on our sites to make animal enrichment, benches, artwork and more
