Northern Giraffe

Habitat
Dry savannah and open forest.
Wild Diet
Leaves and shoots of trees and shrubs, climbers, vines, some herbs, flowers, seed pods and fruit.
Behaviour
The giraffe walks by moving both legs on the same side of the body together. Its maximum galloping speed is 50 - 60kph (31 - 37mph). Giraffes spend 16 to 20 hours a day feeding.
Breeding
A single calf is born after a gestation of approximately 450 - 480 days (15 - 16 months).
Threats
Low population numbers due to hunting.
Conservation
Zoo populations are managed to ensure a healthy breeding stock in case a conservation breeding programme becomes necessary.
