Habitat

Tropical forest and varied habitats from desert to cultivated fields.

Wild Diet

Lizards, birds and small mammals including bats. They hunt at night using their heat sensors to locate prey. They grab the animal in their jaws and consume it whole.

Behaviour

Boa constrictors are pinkish or tan in colour, with dark crossbands. Larger members of the family Boidae have heat-sensitive pits on their head, but this snake has more simple heat-sensitive scales. These snakes are solitary and nocturnal.

Breeding

Females incubate eggs inside their bodies and give birth to up to 60 babies about 40cm long.

Threats

Habitat destruction, persecution.

Conservation

In many parts of tropical America, boa constrictors are valued as destroyers of rodents and have been domesticated for this reason. Many are bred or captured for the pet trade.
