This stunning bird is native to the mountain forests of northeastern China.

Their natural diet consists mainly of roots, bulbs, leaves and insects.

Interesting facts!

  • Unlike many birds, both the males and females of this species have similar plumage – they only vary slightly in size!
  • After breeding, the female lays 5 to 8 eggs, which are a pale green colour. She incubates the eggs for around 28 days before they hatch.

Conservation

Due to their isolated population, deforestation and illegal hunting, the brown-eared pheasant is evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
