Welcome to Paignton Zoo
Badger Watch 01/04/2010
Come and see native badgers in and around their sett at Paignton Zoo.

Badger facts:
  • Badgers live in ‘clans’ consisting of one adult male (boar), females (sows) and their young.
  • 1 to 4 cubs are born each year and suckle for 8 weeks. Their first appearance above ground is in May.
  • They fiercely protect their feeding grounds from other clans.
  • Earthworms form the largest part of the badgers’ diet; they also feed on carrion, birds’ eggs, fruits, nuts, seeds and roots during dry spells.
  • A badger’s life span varies from 5 to 15 years.

Paignton Zoo Badger Watch
One clan of badgers occupies our main viewing site and when the Zoo visitors leave they begin their night time feeding and socialising.

As dusk descends our Zoo keeper will guide you to our custom built viewing hide. With the aid of artificial moonlight you will see some of the badgers emerging from their sett and starting the evening forage for food.
