London to Brighton Run
Zoo scientist in conservation for the long run
It seems that one Devon conservationist is willing to go to any lengths to help save the species she loves. In fact, Dr. Vicky Melfi is running a double marathon in aid of critically endangered primates.
Dr. Melfi, senior research officer with the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, which runs Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, is tackling the London to Brighton 56 - one of the most challenging running events of the year.
She is a leading authority on the Sulawesi crested black macaque, a critically endangered primate of Indonesia. She has carried out research on the island of Sulawesi, where the animal is known locally as yaki, and has set up a new conservation programme called “Selamatkan Yaki!” – save the yaki.
The London to Brighton run is a 56 mile (90 kilometre) cross-country run; it takes place on 5th September, starting at 6:00am from Blackheath, London.
