Welcome to Paignton Zoo

Interrupted brome

Interrupted brome is an English endemic grass species that is extinct in the wild. Seed was collected from one of the last plants in existence and circulated to partner organisations by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.  After several years of increasing the number of individuals in cultivation, a successful trial reintroduction has been carried out followed by a full scale reintroduction.

Paignton Zoo has been responsible for significantly increasing the stored seed of this plant, and has supplied all the material for the full scale reintroduction. This reintroduction involving a plant classified as extinct in the wild is thought to be the first of its kind in England
