Welcome to Paignton Zoo

Buddleja

Paignton Zoo holds a National Collection of naturally occurring Buddleja. The collection contains around 40 different types from Asia, Africa and North and South America.

There are around 100 species in the wild ranging from small sub-shrubs to large trees. They are mainly exhibited alongside other plants from their native areas, however, we are currently planting many of them together as a single collection in our car park. Most are fairly hardy, however some come from tropical regions and are displayed in our tropical houses.

Buddleja are commonly known as butterfly bushes because they produce nectar that attracts butterflies.
